We might as well preach to stone walls as preach to humanity unless the Holy Ghost be with the word, to give it power to convert the soul. Why, sirs, to me the ability of a man who preaches error is my sorrow rather than my admiration. No Christ in your sermon, sir? Then go home, and never preach again until you have something worth preaching. Who would or could have thought of the just Ruler dying for the unjust rebel? This is no teaching of human mythology, or dream of poetical imagination. This method of expiation is only known among men because it is a fact; fiction could not have devised it.

God himself ordained it; it is not a matter which could have been imagined. Oh, see to it that the Word of God is in you, in your very soul, permeating your thoughts, and so operating upon your outward life, that all may know you to be a true Bible-Christian, for they perceive it in your words and deeds. But the world does not read the Bible, the world reads Christians! The Holy Ghost wrote the Scriptures.

Go to him to get their meaning, and you will not be mislead. Do not pollute that holy Name wherewith you are named. Let your family life, your personal life, your business life, be as holy as Christ your Lord would have it to be. Shall saints be shams when sinners are so real? Let our religion be as warm, and constant, and natural as the flow of the blood in our veins.

A living God must be served in a living way. Perhaps not a single one of you would accept the title, and yet, if you live from Monday morning to Saturday night in the same way as you would live if there were no God, you are practical atheists. To love God and to love man is to be conformed to the image of Christ, and this is salvation. Do not make any mistake about it; repentance is not a thing of days and weeks, a temporary penance to be got over as fast as possible! No; it is the grace of a lifetime, like faith itself. Repentance is the inseparable companion of faith.

It is contrary to the laws of your mind to suppose that you can force your soul into that gracious state. Lord, renew it.

Lord, work repentance in it. However, if you believingly think of Jesus dying for you, repentance will burst forth. Then borrow a song from tomorrow; sing of what is yet to be. Is this world dreary? Then think of the next. It is also a blessing that, whatever strength these may have to ruin us, Jesus has still greater power to save us. Like the old knights in war time, we must sleep with helmet and breastplate buckled on, for the arch-deceiver will seize our first unguarded hour to make us his prey.

The Lord keep us watchful in all seasons, and give us a final escape from the jaw of the lion and the paw of the bear. The spade of trouble digs the reservoir of comfort deeper, and makes more room for consolation.

And when God has seemed most cruel to me he has then been most kind. If there is anything in this world for which I would bless him more than for anything else it is for pain and affliction. I am sure that in these things the richest tenderest love has been manifested to me. Love letters from heaven are often sent in black-edged envelopes.

The cloud that is black with horror is big with mercy. Fear not the storm. It brings healing in its wings and when Jesus is with you in the vessel the tempest only hastens the ship to its desired haven.

No water tastes so sweet as that which springs amid the desert sand. And no faith is so precious as that which lives and triumphs through adversity. Tested faith brings experience. You would never have believed your own weakness had you not needed to pass through trials. Those who loved you and were helped by you will remember you when forget-me-nots have withered.

Carve your name on hearts, not on marble. Many might have failed beneath the bitterness of their trial had they not found a friend. If you are not content with what you have, you would not be satisfied if it were doubled.

    During his 38 years of ministry in London, 14, members were added to the church Spurgeon interviewed most of them personally! Spurgeon was unashamedly committed to evangelical Calvinism. Both of these volumes by Murray are highly recommended. These sermons, totaling 3,, fill 63 volumes, some of which extend to pages! As I read them week by week in my young manhood, they gave me a grip of the Gospel that I can never lose, and gave me an ideal of its presentation in nervous, transparent, and forcible language which has coloured sic my entire ministry.

    Self-evidently, the 19th century Spurgeon did not possess the many fine insights of philological, hermeneutical, and biblical-theological studies that have been done in the 20th century. Spurgeon is not a model of consecutive expository preaching such as that done by Calvin, and revived in our own day by the late D.

    Indeed, Charles Spurgeon rarely preached sermon series of any sort. He is the exemplar par excellence of topical preaching.

    Nor is Spurgeon always the best model of grammatical-historical exegesis that is scrupulous about dealing with a text in its context. Nevertheless, as models of thoroughly doctrinal, Bible-enriched, pastoral preaching that exalts Jesus Christ and freely offers Him to listener and reader alike, Spurgeon is unmatched. With good reason many a minister has urged fellow ministers and men preparing for the ministry to read at least one sermon by Spurgeon a week.

    There is no single discipline that has helped me keep my preaching fresh and Christ-centered from week to week except perhaps listening to tapes of fine sermons preached in our own day than the discipline of letting the great Mr. Spurgeon preach to me as I read selections from the volumes of his sermons.     While evangelistic messages and sermons of pastoral encouragement were dominant, Spurgeon never shied away from opening, illustrating, and applying the grand doctrinal themes of Holy Scripture. Especially in his early ministry as the congregation at the New Park Street Chapel was growing rapidly, Spurgeon dealt forthrightly with the doctrine of God. Never embarrassed about his Calvinistic convictions much to the embarrassment of many later Baptists who claim Spurgeon as their own! Nor would Spurgeon give an ear to the superficial observation that the Christian life is more important than Christian doctrine.

    Yet it was the way in which Spurgeon preached deep biblical doctrine that gave such force to his sermons. He was not content with laying the matter before his congregation like a chef would present a fine meal before diners.
